Inclusivity in TV and Movies

Welcome to 2024!

We're kicking off the new year by highlighting the ever increasing inclusivity of those with disabilities in TV shows and movies.

Below are examples of actors and actresses with disabilities, portraying characters with disabilities. Click on the IMDB link to see the movie/show details.

Love on the Spectrum

Breaking Bad

While many know Breaking Bad and Walter White, many may not know that Walter White, Jr. has cerebral palsy. RJ Mitte, the actor behind Walter White, Jr., also has cerebral palsy. - IMDB

The Peanut Butter Falcon

"Zak (22), a young man with Down syndrome, runs away from the nursing home where he lives to chase his dream of becoming a professional wrestler by attending the wrestling school The Salt Water Redneck." Zak is played by Zack Gottsagen who has Down syndrome. - IMDB

Speechless

Speechles is about a family of a teenager who has cerebral palsy and is nonverbal. The main character, JJ, is played by Micah Fowler, who has cerebral palsy. - IMDB

CODA

A film about Ruby, "the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family's fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her passion at Berklee College of Music and her fear of abandoning her parents." - IMDB

We’re excited to say there are many others not listed here and there are many more in the works. And thanks in large part to providers, the future gets brighter every day. The more providers can focus on person-centered care and supports, more individuals with disabilities will be able to achieve their dreams of acting and living the lives they want.

Wishing you an amazing week!
